Hot tubs all round!

Posted on October 23, 2012 by , in 2. Hot Tubs & Gazebos

In the past 18 years the National Lottery has created 3,000 millionaires. But what have the lucky winners spent their money on?

According to a study by Camelot and Oxford Economics, over £8.5bn has been won since the National Lottery launched in 1994, with the average win coming in at £2.8m. The average win laid end to end in £10 notes would stretch for 25 miles.

So where do hot tubs feature in the spending priorities of new Lotto winners?

Hot Tubs came out top!

Whilst over £460m has been spent on buying new cars – caravans, walk-in wardrobes, electric gates, games rooms and snooker tables have all been high on the shopping lists of those lucky enough to scoop top prize. But it has been revealed today that hot tubs are best when it comes the percentage ownership, with 29% of winners choosing to install their very own bubbling hot tub in their swish homes.

“That’s almost 1,000 of the very best hot tubs installed into the homes of  lottery millionaires which is a truly staggering statistic. It just goes to show how enjoyable hot tubs are and when the financial barriers to ownership are removed, a huge proportion of the population would choose to own one. When you compare this figure to the hot tub ownership proportion in the general population of less than 1% of homes having hot tubs, this is staggering news,” commented Nick Clamp, Editor of WhatSpa? Magazine.

In what has arguably been the perfect storm for seasonal businesses, namely a depressed economy coupled with the worst summer weather on record, one young entrepreneur is sailing a trend-bucking course through it all with their latest, rather unique, proposition.

Alex Kemsley, managing director of the Waterstream Group based on the Handcross Garden Centre on the A23 just south of Crawley, is so confident that we’re in for an Indian Summer, that he is guaranteeing the sunshine for anyone who buys a pool or a hot tub from them over £6,000 between now and the official end of British Summer Time – and paying them in hard cash if he’s wrong!

Alex says, “No, we’ve not gone completely mad! But we are so confident that it’s going to be glorious between now and midnight on October 28th, that we’re going to give back £5 for every day it rains to anyone who buys a selected pool or hot tub between the date of their purchase and the end of BST. We’ve been told that we could potentially be giving back a lot of money, but it’s a bit of fun and encouragement for all our staff to be out every day doing a sun dance! It’s also to highlight that, hot tubs in particular, are at their most invigorating and enjoyable when used in showers of rain or snow”.

Clearly there is some small print, but the essence of the promotion is that if the Met Office (to ensure it’s all fair and above board) record any precipitation during a 24 hour period in the customer’s postcode, they get £5 cash back for every day that happens between now and the end of British Summer TIme in October.Bizarrely, it appears that Waterstream could be on to something with their predictions, as temperatures are forecast to hit 30°C in the south east this weekend!

Following the issuing of a joint press release between a number of water authorities, the messages being given in the media are inaccurate compared to current legislation and so the British Swimming Pool Federation (BSPF) are in urgent talks with the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) to ensure the correct messages are given out by water authorities.

The BSPF acknowledges the issues being faced by a number of water authorities who are experiencing lower than average rainfall patterns for the last number of years. However the introduction of the temporary Water Use Ban (Hosepipe Ban) appears to have led some of the water authorities to suggest that hot tubs are classified the same as swimming pools which is factually incorrect.

In fact, hot tubs are not affected by prospective hosepipe bans and will still be allowed to be topped up and refilled even under a ban.
